Episode 06 : "Vikor"

Summary

Lord Jack

Review

After being spoiled by years of watching, "Book 'em, Danno" on "Hawaii Five-O," it's easy to forget what a good actor Jack Lord really was. I was reminded of this as I watched the scene where the millionaire industrialist Jack plays recordings of his heroic return to the United States after being decorated in Korea -- his face seems to literally melt with sadness as he realizes his past is lost and he has sold himself and his country out to the Invaders. In other scenes, Jack seethes with intensity as he relates how the powers-that-be cheated him out of his first contracts, and told him "a man with a wooden leg and a plate in his skull didn't have far to go in this world." Not far, except with the Invaders! Alfred Ryder makes his first of many appearances as the shadowy alien leader "Nexus", and once again David Vincent manages to squirm his way into being at exactly the right place at the right time. How convenient for hour-long series television! We also see David knock out some aliens with just a few carefully-landed punches -- landed hard enough so the aliens don't come back for more. Again, very convenient for series television. But we are always willing to make a few concessions here and there, especially when the stories are compelling and the acting is good, as we get here just before Mr. Lord decided to move out west to Hawaii.
